destructive binge
His "destructive binge" ended a lingering war much more quickly than if he hadn't engaged in the campaign, that's for certain. I don't think any history books really paint Sherman as a "nice person" or a "saint," rather an angry, bereaved, and effective military leader who developed the "total war" strategy that the American military (and others) subsequently adopted. His ingenious tactics cut the spindly legs out from under the Confederacy, and if the Confederacy had had the opportunity, technology or manpower to do the same thing, it would have.

I am not defending anything
I am not defending anything that happened in the Confederate states. Slavery was and is shameful. Sherman was not the saint people paint him to be. There's a lot of Union troops that committed atrocities towards innocent people who just happened to be in the South, just as Confederate soldiers did the same at times. Sherman was not a nice person. He didn't have to go on a destructive binge, but he most certainly did. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Sherman
Not burned, just old and with a bright red beard that has been saturated with plaster. Sherman invented the concept of total war, and it was a fitting punitive measure against a people who had enslaved a race and rebelled when a higher power tried to stop it. And Sherman never commanded his troops to rape anything -- just to remove the rebel slavers' ability to wage war (via crops, farms, warehouses, railways, etc.). As for his actions against Native Americans, there was plenty of violence on both sides, notwithstanding the fact that the American brutality was, shamefully, official policy.
I love it when people defend a system that allowed, encouraged and spread the inhuman pccatice of slavery -- and then get all lathered up over the people who stopped it. If Sherman's in hell, he has the company of the entire population of the Confederate States.

No, but he should've been burned
This is the infamous General Sherman who lead the Sherman's March to the Sea-he commanded all the Union troops to burn, rape and pillage everything in their path in the South, which is exactly what they did. Many cities and towns and villages were burned to the ground because of him, people tortured, raped, beaten and dispossesed of all they had. History books make it seem like what he was doing was a great victory for the USA, but it wasn't-it was one of the most shameful acts ever committed in this country. It didn't surprised me that he would go on to slaughter Indians-he got off on killing and hurting people. Hope it's nice and hot where he is now.

One of the Indian killers haunted by his sins....
By 1868, this man was commander in chief of United States army; wich means he was responsible at first rank for Indians (Sioux) massacres.
This man has never been judged by any court against humanity crimes.
Looking at his mask, we can see his fear of death, wich was well deserved after all!!!

more info
I just checked this website:
http://www.civilwarhome.com/sherbio.htm
and it says he died in NYC on Feb 14, 1891. No mention of getting burned, just wounded during the Civil war. Sure does look like it though.

re:Burned?
That was my first thought...he must have been burned. It's strange that it's just on his face and neck, none on his shoulders.
