Whatever
killed this woman, she did not die a peaceful or painless death. I knew this the second I saw this mask.

chin
might have been something tied under her chin to keep the mouth from falling open. how wonderful and unusual to see one that old! I always wondered if portraits from the time were accurate. She looks just like a DaVinci (though I think he came later). She must have been important, to merit a death mask.

Hanged?
It appears from the deep channel around this woman's neck that she was hanged or strangled. Could this have been a ritual murder?

PAIN
It gives the look of a death not peaceful.

Criminal?
the position of "her" head makes me think of someone who has been "hanging" for a while with possibly a burlap sack around their head... gallows perhaps???????? very, very common at that time...

Maybe...
the hair was pulled back and wrapped up so the dried mask could be removed.

534 years old
Where does a 534 yr old mask reside?
It does sort of look like a nun's collar and cap but it could just be her skin. It's awfully old.

nun?
It appears to me to be a habit around her head & neck.

I can't say i like this one
Maybe it's the age of the mask or the way there is such a fine line cutting deeply underneath the neck but it makes me think of murder and not a natural death at all. Probably totally wrong but still, I do find it a little odd.

For that date you would expect it to be in worse shape

Creation of mask...
Do you have a timeline of what substances were used to make these masks?

Creepy:
Creepy, makes you wonder why such masks were taken and I am interested in how masks like this are made.
